A stroke is a severe medical emergency. Immediate medical attention is necessary. A strokes may not cause pain therefore patients often delay seeking treatment, resulting in extensive brain tissue damage.

Symptoms of stroke depend on the type and which area of the brain is effected.  Symptoms may include the following:

bulletDifficulty speaking or understanding speech (aphasia)
bulletDifficulty walking
bulletDizziness or lightheadedness (vertigo)
bulletNumbness, paralysis, or weakness, usually on one side of the body
bulletSeizure (relatively rare)
bulletSevere headache with no known cause
bulletSudden confusion
bulletSudden decrease in the level of consciousness
bulletSudden loss of balance or coordination
bulletSudden vision problems (e.g., blurry vision, blindness in one eye)
bulletVomiting

The treatment of the cognitive and/or behavioral consequences of a stroke (besides prevention) require special individualized care from your neuropsychologist who will work with neurologists and other specialized teams who specialize in stroke rehabilitation.

Specific treatment for stroke rehabiliation will be determined by

bullet your age, overall health, and medical history
bullet severity of the stroke
bullet location of the stroke
bullet cause of the stroke
bullet your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
