What is an adjustment disorder? Adjustment disorders are
common and can affect anyone, regardless of age,
gender, lifestyle, or race. An adjustment disorder is a
behavioral response to a stressful event or variation in a child
or adolescent’s life that is not a healthy response to the event
or change. An adjustment disorder prompts an unbearable reaction,
usually lasting less than six months, to a stressful or
traumatic event or situation. An adjustment disorder is not the
same thing as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which
usually occurs in reaction to a life-threatening event and can
be longer lasting.
An adjustment disorder usually begins within three months of a
particularly stressful event, and ends within six months after
the stressor stops. There are numerous subtypes of adjustment
disorders, including adjustment disorder with:
anxious
